Back to the Dark Ages: what happens when social media goes dark?

On the 4th of October, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all went down for hours. At a first glance, this is a very trivial, first-world problem. At a second glance, when social platforms with several billion users go dark, communication can become a big problem and promotion an even bigger one. What if the outage lasted for days, instead of hours? What if those platforms never came back?

In the flood of social media platforms in the 21st century, we have almost forgotten that we can communicate outside of them too. And that doesn’t go just for our personal life, but also for our business communication. While the above what-ifs are all valid questions, we often seem to forget that some people don’t use social media platforms at all. Think of your grandparents for example – are they scrolling through Facebook in the morning, or do they still prefer to read the daily newspaper instead? How about all those people who are taking a break of social media, a trend that has been on the raise lately?
If we as a company focus solely on social media as our only tool of communication, we are missing out on a whole lot of potential customers. For that not to happen, here are a few ideas about social-media-alternatives, when it comes to promotion:

  • leaflets,
  • e-mail lists,
  • posters,
  • word-of mouth promotion,
  • participation at events and fairs,
  • webpage

While social media remains a prominent tool for business promotion and communication, we encourage you to make use of above alternatives as well.
